Crossing the State Line - from Suffern, NY to Mahwah, NJ. August 25th, 2006

The official celebration of the 225th anniversary of the crossing of the NY/NJ State line was held in Suffern NY, August 25th, 2006. Captain Mike Fitzgerald and his troop of intrepid reenactors were met by a large crowd of dignitaries, historical organizations, scouts, and well-wishers from both sides of the Stateline.

W3R banners along Ramapo Valley Road

The cloth banners are in Mahwah, Bergen County.

W3R-NJ sign along Ramapo Valley Road

One of the W3R signs put up on Ramapo Valley Road (the official W3R route) through Mahwah in Bergen County. The W3R signs are positioned above the Continental Soldiers Memorial Highway signs, erected in 2000 during Mahwah's Tricentennial celebration.

Similar W3R signs have been placed on Island Road (the old King's Highway), Mahwah, which was a secondary W3R route through Bergen County.

Rochambeau "Surrender of Cornwallis"

Trumbull painted Rochambeau true to life - as a fifty-five-year-old man with a ruddy face and a stocky build. 

Washington at Trenton

Trumbull painted several portraits of Washington but considered this one as the best. It was painted in 1792 for the City of Charleston. When the city fathers were not satisfied with it, it remained in Trumbull's possession until it was purchased by Yale College.

La Fayette

A French aristocrat that embraced the cause of liberty in America and totally supported the revolutionary effort to with his fortune and military leadership. By the end of the Revolutionary War, La Fayette, next to Washington, was the most popular man in America.

The Surrender of Cornwallis

The central figure on horseback is said to be General Lincoln who received the surrender from O'Hara.

Rochambeau's Headquarters in Newport

The house, which has been preserved by the Preservation Society of Newport, is on the corner of Mary and Clarke. At the time of the Revolution, it belonged to William Vernon.
